120,000 emergency life-saving surgical procedures were performed over a year in the SNNPR region, Mr.Shimelis Tesfaye (Regional PAESOE coordinator) reported. 70 IESOs from 72 hospitals attended the Annual Meeting of the SNNPR branch of PAESOE.

IESOs carried out 20176 caesarean sections since graduating. In first 3 months of 2016, there were 3035 caesarean sections and 970 other laparotomies. Task-sharing with non-doctor emergency surgeons improves access/outcomes for patients in need of essential surgical care.

In an article published in the Ethiopian Journal of Health Sciences, the authors praise the clinical decision making and surgical skills of ESOs and their impact on improving access to emergency surgery to the population. IESOs performed 94% of 4075 emergency surgeries performed between 2012 and 2014.
